Interesting to me that IMDB lists webseries as "TV series" or even "TV mini-series" in the case of shows like THE TEMP LIFE.

Great point/counterpoint. Ultimately, we have to remember that the networks don't have any more of an idea what the future holds than the digital side of entertainment does. They just have more money to lose finding out.

back in 2006, say, it was thought that a "web" series was going to be something different than television because it would use features of the internet that TV doesn't have -- i.e., interactivity, ability to chat with characters, to extend the show off just video into comments, social networking sites, etc. this was the basic vision of miles beckett of eqal at the time.

that model never really spread through the whole LA scene. Big Fantastic has used it to some degree (Prom Queen characters had myspace accounts and were active online). Quarterlife was intended to foster a community around it, and did for some time.

but if you are making an original series that doesn't leverage the internet as a key factor of the show, its not a "web series" anyway. its just a short film, or original series of shorts, etc.

It seems like a year ago that I submitted my suggestion to the
IAWTV, the International Academy of Web Television, that the "W" be
removed from the organization's name, as the "W" no longer
represented the original television programming genre. I publicly repeated this
position on July 19, 2011 with the note, 'The label the
industry has historically used to describe short-form episodic programming,
"Web Series," no longer applies. No matter how one cuts it, whether
short-form or long, it's all TV now!'

Shortly thereafter, our Network officially
changed its messaging and no longer uses "Web" to describe our
programming.

Simply stated, consumers don't
generally focus on how their imagery is delivered/received. The tech behind the
wall, whether via satellite, cable/Internet, or WiFi, simply doesn't matter to
the average viewer - they just want their favorite television shows, movies,
etc., when and wherever they want it.

Once again, it’s all TV now.
